Ceolin nets game tying marker late in the third frame in MASCAC draw

Salem, Mass. – The Fitchburg State ice hockey team skated to a 3-3 overtime draw with the Vikings of Salem State University this evening in Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) action from the Rockett Ice Arena.

The Basics

Score: Fitchburg State 3, Salem State 3 OT
Records: Fitchburg State (11-7-3, 8-3-3 MASCAC) | Salem State (4-12-5, 4-7-3 MASCAC)

How It Happened

Fitchburg State grabbed the lead 11:55 into the opening frame as sophomore forward Ryan Murphy (Wayzata, Minn.) gathered a feed from freshman Anthony Ceolin (Simsbury, Conn.) and found the back of the net for his team-leading 12th marker on the season for the 1-0 edge.

Salem State knotted the score (1-1) roughly five minutes later when freshman center Michael Shippee (Seattle, Wash.) netted his fifth goal of the season with assists from newcomers Spencer DeRidder (Rochester, N.Y) and Luke Pepin (Lee, N.H.).

In the middle stanza, the Vikings took the lead midway through the second period with junior forward Dan Shea (Hingham, Mass.) put a shot inside the near post for his first marker of the 2019-20 campaign off an assist from Pepin to make the score 2-1.

The Falcons retied the contest (2-2) 5:24 into the third period as senior Christopher Vicario (Cranston, R.I.) received a pass from freshman Wyatt Wilmshurst (Massena, N.Y.) and classmate Anton Metelev (Kirov, Russia) and deposited a shot into the back of the net for his fifth goal on the season.

Salem State regained the advantage a minute and half later though with DeRidder connecting on his fifth tally of the year as Pepin and sophomore Josh Grasso (Wolfboro, N.H.) assisting on the play for the 3-2 edge.

The Green and Gold managed to get the equalizer with 35 seconds remaining in regulation when Ceolin notched his fifth goal on the season off helpers by classmates Joshua Miller (Saint Augustine, Fla.) and Hunter Fortin (Westerville, Ohio) to set the game into overtime.

In the overtime period, Salem State had a pair of quality scoring opportunities as Grasso and freshman Connor Woolley (Poghquag, N.Y.) put shots on frame, but Fitchburg State netminder Brian McGrath (Worcester, Mass.) was able to turn aside both shots to preserve the draw.
