Seahawks cruise in opener

PLYMOUTH, N.H. – Five different skaters scored for the Salve Regina University men's ice hockey team in a 5-0 victory over Plymouth State University in a non-conference men's ice hockey game at Hanaway Rink on Friday night.

Salve Regina broke through in the final minute of the opening period, then notched a power play tally midway through the second to take a 2-0 lead. Plymouth State was unable to capitalize on a 5-on-3 opportunity later in the frame, and the Seahawks added three third period goals to close out the game.

            How it Happened.

·         Salve Regina took a 1-0 lead with just 25 seconds left in the opening period when junior Edward Hirka (Vienna, Va.) fired a shot from just inside the blue line that deflected off Brawley's blocker into the net.

·         The Seahawks doubled the lead 7:12 into the second period when freshman Spencer Stanley (South Lyon, Mich.) fired a slap shot past a screened Brawley during a power play.

·         Plymouth State had a prime opportunity to cut into the deficit six minutes later, but the home team was unable to capitalize on a 5-3 opportunity.

·         Junior Erik Udahl (East Walpole, Mass.) made it 3-0 after picking up a loose puck following a blocked shot and slipping it in along the nearside post 3:19 into the third.

·         The Seahawks made it 4-0 just over three minutes later when a shot deflected off the boards to junior Timothy Sweeney (Hanover, Mass.), who poked the puck past Brawley.

·         Sophomore J.J. Layton (Peabody, Mass.) capped the scoring with a wrist shot from the point with 30 seconds to play to account for the final score.

            Inside the Numbers:

·         Brawley's 39 saves were the most for the Panthers since a 47-save effort last January 12th, in a 3-3 overtime tie at UMass Dartmouth.

·         Sophomore Louis-Felix St. Jean (St. Bruno, Quebec) stopped all 30 shots he faced to post the shutout win for Salve Regina.

·         The Seahawks held a 44-30 advantage in shots, including a 15-7 edge in the opening period.

·         PSU was held scoreless in six power play opportunities, while Salve Regina finished 1-for-3.
