Women's Basketball Soars to 68-45 Win over Fitchburg State

NEW LONDON, N.H. – November 15, 2019 – The Colby-Sawyer women's basketball team defeated Fitchburg State, 68-45, in the first game of the 2019 Colby-Sawyer Tip-Off Tournament Friday evening.

Colby-Sawyer improves to 2-0 and will play Saint Lawrence in tomorrow's championship game at 4 p.m. Fitchburg State falls to 0-3 and will play Colby tomorrow at 2 p.m. Saint Lawrence defeated Colby, 66-59, in tonight's other game.

Tomorrow's Colby-Sawyer/Saint Lawrence game will feature former Sunapee teammates Lexie Hamilton and Katie Frederick.

Junior Joslin Wainwright (Plainfield, N.H.) led Colby-Sawyer with 15 points on 6-6 shooting. She added eight rebounds. Senior Tianna Sugars (Oxford, Maine) posted a double-double of 13 points and 10 rebounds. Senior Lexie Hamilton (Sunapee, N.H.) filled the stat sheet with 11 points, eight assists, six steals and five rebounds. Senior Kristen Donaghey (Franklin, Mass.) chipped in with nine points.

Fitchburg State was led by senior Angelina Marazzi (Manchester, N.H.) who scored a game-high 22 points on 9-17 shooting. First-year Lindsay McDonald (Stoughton, Mass.) added seven points and four rebounds.

The Chargers used their size in the first quarter to score 14 of the 19 points in the paint. Sugars had nine in the frame to lead all players. Colby-Sawyer raced out to a 13-2 advantage through the first 5:34 of the quarter before the Falcons answered with a pair of layups to cut the lead to 13-6. The home team pushed its lead to 19-6 with less than a minute to play. Junior Mishelle Logie (Attleboro, Mass.) scored on the next trip down the floor for Fitchburg State to end the quarter 19-8 in favor of Colby-Sawyer.

After a bucket by Wainwright opened the second, Fitchburg came back with two made baskets by Marazzi to cut the deficit to 21-12. Senior Emma Thomson (York, Maine) connected on a trey, midway through the frame, to pull Fitchburg State within seven, 26-19. The Chargers responded with a 6-0 run before the Falcons ended the half with another bucket by Marazzi, who led all players with nine points in the frame.  

Colby-Sawyer pulled away in the third quarter behind 60% shooting. The Chargers outscored Fitchburg State 23-7 and received points from seven different players.

The Falcons had a 17-13 advantage in the scoring column in the fourth, but Colby-Sawyer cruised for the 68-45 victory.
