Salem State Defeats Becker 3-1

Leicester, Mass. -- Salem State reveiced goals from Casie Curtin (Wrentham, Mass.), Marissa Laganas (Beverly, Mass.) and Jillian Danton (Arlington, Mass.) as the Vikings dispatched the Becker Hawks 3-1 at Alumni Field on Thursday afternoon. Salem State improves to 3-1 on the year while the Hawks go to 2-2. 

The visitors struck just six minutes into the first quarter when senior midfielder Curtin came across the crease from the right side and took a pass from freshman midfielder Mikayla Mason (Beverly, Mass. / Beverly) and shot it straight through into the corner for her third goal of the season as Salem State took a 1-0 lead.

In the second quarter, with just 5:05 before the break, Curtin recovered a rebound in front of the Becker goal and fed Salem State sophomore midfielder Laganas, who put it in for her second goal of the season for the Vikings.

With just 1.7 seconds left, Becker senior midfielder Amy Cooper (Monument, Colo. / Lewis Palmer) recovered a deflection and fed sophomore midfielder Kylian Kelly (Shrewsbury, Mass. / Shrewsbury) for her second goal of the year, cutting the deficit to 2-1 going into halftime.

After a scoreless third quarter, Salem State junior midfielder Danton (Arlington, Mass. / Arlington) scored the insurance goal, assisted by sophomore midfielder Allison Couillard (Tewksbury, Mass. / Tewksbury) with less than six minutes to go, putting the Vikings ahead 3-1, which held up for the final score.

Sophomore goalkeeper Kelli McCarthy (Foxborough, Mass. / Foxborough) picked up the win for Salem State, tallying six saves while sophomore goalkeeper Baileigh Griese (Woodstock, N.Y. / Onteora) made 11 saves in net for Becker. The second-year player entered the day leading the New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) in save percentage for the season.
