Plymouth Edges Ice Hockey; 5-3

Plymouth NH.- Plymouth State freshman Myles Abbate (Norwell, Mass.) broke a 3-3 tie in the 3rd period as the Panthers defeated Framingham State University, 5-3, in a Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) men's ice hockey contest at Hanaway Rink Thursday night.

THE BASICS:

- Score: Plymouth State 5, Framingham State 3

- Records: Plymouth State (2-1, 1-0 MASCAC), Framingham State (0-3, 0-2 MASCAC)

Location: Hanaway Rink - Plymouth, NH

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Plymouth State capitalized on one of its early rushes as senior Alec LeFave (Hudson, N.H.) entered the zone and slid a pass around a Rams' defender to Laviolette along the far side, whose shot from just above the face off dot found the back of the net at the 3:01 mark.
  • Framingham State tied the game at 11:53 when senior Brenden Williams (Richmond, Va.) connected on a slap shot a few strides in from the far side point.
  •  The Panthers scored their first power play goal of the year to grab the lead back at just over two minutes later when Leo Stolpe (Stockholm, Sweden) tipped a shot in front of the net into the goalie's chest and put home the rebound for his first career goal.
  • PSU extended its lead as senior Victor Bergstrom (Angelholm, Sweden) fired a shot from the near side point and JR Barone (West Chester, Pa.) tipped it to the five hole at 18:13.
  • FSU cut the deficit to 3-2 at the 2:42 mark of the second period when freshman Jake Conrad (Romeoville, Ill.) slid a shot from the point through traffic and past the PSU goaltender's left pad.
  • A short-handed opportunity for PSU on a Framingham State power play quickly turned into a two-on-one breakaway for the Rams, and junior Ryan Paul (Morgan, Vt.) converted to even the score with 4:11 left in the second.
  • The Panthers picked up the intensity in the second half of the third period, posting some strong zone time throughout the latter half of the frame. A power play opportunity was all PSU needed to tip the scales, as Abbate converted off of the man-advantage faceoff to take the lead for good.
  • Junior Brett Backman (Cos Cob, Conn.) added an empty-netter with 35 seconds to play to seal the Panthers' win.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

  • Barone added an assist to his goal, while LeFave and Bergstrom each recorded a pair of helpers.
  • After starting the season 0-of-13 on the power play, PSU converted on 2-of-3 chances. The Rams went 1-for-5 with a man advantage.
  • Senior Andreas Pettersson (Trollhattan, Sweden) made 21 saves to improve to 2-0-0 on the year, while his counterpart, senior Greg Harney (East Haven, Conn.) stopped 39 shots but dropped to 0-2-0.
