Westfield State softball dropped a split doubleheader on Tuesday in Clermont, Fla., falling to UMass Dartmouth 9-1 in 6 innings in the opener, then falling in a tight game to Suffolk University, 4-2 in the nightcap.

In the opener, the floodgates opened early, as the Owls committed four errors in the first inning, leading to four unearned runs.

Westfield State junior Emily Arredondo pitched deceptively well in working a complete game, allowing two earned runs on eight UMD  hits.

The Corsairs strung together two singles followed by a 2-run triple from Leah Major in the fifth inning.

Farrah Adam had a double and a triple for the Owls, scoring Westfield's lone run in the second inning when she doubled and eventually came around to score on a wild pitch.  Jess Chenard and Lindsay Cordopatri each had a pair of hits for the Owls.

In the nightcap the Owls grabbed a 1-0 lead over Suffolk in the bottom of the second as Sam Hallice scored on Farrah Adam's single, as the throw from center field skipped away from the catcher.

Suffolk tallied two in third on a two-rbi double from Kelly Keane.

Westfield State answered with a single run in the third when Alexandra Czarkosky's single scored Kaitlynn Prophet.

Suffolk tacked on one run in both the fourth and one in the fifth innings.

Sam Hallice doubled in the seventh inning to offer a threat from the Owls, but Westfield couldn't push the equalizing runs across.

Brenna Welch took the pitching loss for Westfield.   She worked a complete game, scattering 12 hits and allowing four earned runs.

Westfield State is back in action tomorrow as the Owls will face Husson and Juniata with a 4:15 start at Legends Way Field #4 in Clermont.
