Wildcats End Field Hockey's Win Streak, Strike Down Owls 3-0

WESTFIELD, Mass.  – Westfield State University saw their three-game winning streak come to an end Wednesday afternoon, as Johnson and Wales sophomore Jillian Miele (Wilmington, Mass.) scored twice to lead the Wildcats over the Owls 3-0 in non-conference action at Alumni Field.

The Wildcats notched their first win of the season (1-4) and goalkeeper Grace Pendergast (Berlin, Mass.) secured her first shutout of the year.

The game was evenly matched early on, until Johnson and Wales finally broke the ice five minutes into the second quarter.

Freshman Morgan LeDuc (Dudley, Mass.) dribbled the ball along the goal line and took a shot riddled for the back of the net until WSU sophomore Autumn Metivier (West Springfield, Mass.) stepped in and provided a defensive save for the Owls. The trouble was not over however, as Leduc would take the rebound off Metivier and pass it over to teammate Jillian Miele for the finish and 1-0 lead.

The Wildcats would make it 2-0 moments before the end of the half when Mackenzie Wolf (Reistertown, Md.) masterfully redirected a shot from Hailey Schneider (Freehold, N.J.) for the tally.

The Owls poured on the shots in the second half, but all of them would be denied by Pendegast.

Miele would later tack on her second goal of the game with just under five minutes remaining to secure the victory for Johnson and Wales.

Despite being outscored, Westfield State held the edge in total shots, 15-12. Owl goalkeeper Riley Goulet (Marion, Mass.) made 10 saves for the Owls, while Grace Pendergast stopped 8 shots from the Westfield State attack in the shutout victory.

Westfield now falls to 3-2 on the young season and now prepares for their first Little East Conference game of the year, as they host Keene State on Saturday afternoon at Alumni Field.

Johnson and Wales is back in action again on Saturday, as they travel to New England College to take on the Pilgrims at 2:00 p.m.
