Ice Hockey Hangs on for 5-4 Win Over Worcester State

Framingham, Mass.- The Framingham State men's ice hockey team scored three third period goals en route to a 5-4 win over Worcester State in MASCAC action Thursday evening at Loring Arena.

THE BASICS:

- Score:  Framingham State 5, Worcester State 4

- Records:  Framingham State (3-17-2, 2-12-1 MASCAC), Worcester State (5-15-2, 3-11-1 MASCAC)

- Location: Loring Arena – Framingham, Mass.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • After a quiet first period the middle of the second saw a flurry of scores. First the Lancers scored in the 8th minute of the 2nd when Mark Revniaga scored off assists from Jake Karelas and Kevin Drevitch on the powerplay. 
  • The Rams answered on a powerplay of their own when Zach Bettmeng found a loose puck in front of the Worcester goalie and finished it off.
  • The Lancers answered under a minute later when Brian Smith scored with help from Matthew Manning and Henry Bruckner.
  • Bettmeng tied the score when a missed pass by the Lancers sent the puck into the Rams end. Bettmeng chased it down deked a defender and buried the puck in the net to send the two teams into the break 2-2.
  • The Lancers broke the tie in the opening minute of the 3rd when Ahearn gave them the lead.
  • The Rams would answer again in the 5th minute when Bryan Whelan would find the back of the net. The visitors again quickly retook the lead less than a minute later with a Gunther Stange score, but the hosts tied it back up quickly in the next minute with a Ryan Paul goal at the 6:01 mark.
  • The Rams would take the lead at the 7:58 mark when Jack Pierson finished off a one-time pass from Matthew Irwin to take their first lead of the game.
  • The Rams would fight through a couple Worcester powerplays and the Lancers pulling their goalie for over two minutes but were able to preserve the win. 

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

  • Nevin Tardiff made 36 saves in net for the Lancers while Blake Carlson turned away 37 shots in net for the Rams.
  • The teams each took 41 shots on the night.
  • The Rams were 1-for-4 on the man advantage while the Lancers were 1-for-6 on the powerplay.

The Rams will host to Fitchburg State for a MASCAC tilt on senior night Saturday now at 5:40 pm.  The Lancers host Plymouth State also on Saturday at 7:10 pm.
