Cambridge, Mass. - MIT knocked down eight three-pointers in the first quarter and then generated a 17-9 run during the fourth quarter, helping propel it to an 80-69 victory over Framingham State University in a non-conference women's basketball game on Tuesday night. Sophomore Christina Antonakakis led all players with a career-high 26 points while dishing out six assists for the Engineers. Flannery O'Connor led the way for the Rams as she tallied 24 points, seven rebounds, and two steals.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • MIT drained its first eight three-point attempts of the game and built a 34-11 advantage over the course of the opening 7:38. Following six points by Framingham State, a jumper by Antonakakis at the buzzer gave the Engineers a 36-17 lead.
  • The hosts generated a 13-6 run as two free throws by senior Alexis Groark gave MIT its largest margin at 26 points with just over four minutes remaining in the second quarter.
  • The Rams responded with 12 unanswered points, entering halftime trailing 49-35. O'Connor contributed four points as her layup sparked the run while Krysta Padellaro accounted for eight points, including a pair of three-pointers.
  • Framingham State carried the momentum into the third quarter as a layup by Emily Velozo brought it within six (55-49) with just under three minutes left. A layup by sophomore Anna Broski followed by a steal and a fastbreak layup by classmate Paula Pieper ended the Engineers' scoring drought and reestablished their double-digit lead. However, the Rams put together a 7-2 burst as O'Connor knocked down a jumper right before time expired.
  • Framingham State continued to attack, narrowing the gap to three on two occasions, the last at 63-60 on two O'Connor free throws with 7:10 remaining in the game. MIT replied with back-to-back jumpers from sophomore Annika Sougstad, igniting the pivotal 17-9 game-ending run for the Engineers.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

  • Senior Cindy Si posted 16 points while Sougstad finished 10. Pieper tallied eight points, seven assists, and four steals as Groark collected a team-high eight rebounds.
  • Velozo totaled 15 points while Mary Kate O'Day generated 12 points, a game-high 11 rebounds, and five assists. Padellaro chipped in 12 points as Liana Cunningham grabbed seven rebounds.
  • MIT shot 44.4 percent (28-of-63) from field, including a 36.7 percent performance (11-of-30) from three-point range, and 76.5 percent (13-of-17) from the free throw line. The Engineers ended the night with advantages in points in the paint (28-22), points off turnovers (28-12), and fastbreak points (4-0).
  • Framingham State shot 42.6 percent (23-of-54) from the field, 37.5 percent (9-of-24) from three-point range, and 77.8 (14-of-18) from the charity stripe. The Rams had the upper hand in rebounds (40-29), second-chance points (16-12), and bench scoring (18-11).

UP NEXT:

Both teams will be at home for their next outings. MIT will host Endicott College on Saturday, Jan. 4 at 2:00 p.m. while Framingham State returns to the court on Thursday, Dec. 12 for a 7:00 p.m. game against Anna Maria College.
