Falcons Drop 66-46 Decision to  Worcester State

The Fitchburg State Women's Basketball team dropped a 66-46 decision to the  Lancers of Worcester State this afternoon  in Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) action from the Parkinson Gymnasium.

How It Happened

Fitchburg State opened up an 11-4 lead capped by a try from senior Emma Thomson (York, ME) just four minutes into the contest.  The Lancers answered back with seven straight to even the score on a layup from senior Catherine Sweeney (Lowell, Mass.). A three-point play from Gigi LeMay (Grafton, Mass.) gave the visitors their first lead of the game (14-13).  Junior Colleen Cutting (Auburn, Mass.) finished the frame with a pair of free-throws for a 21-13 Lancer lead.

Worcester State continued to pull away in the second quarter to take a 38-23 edge into the dressing room. Fitchburg State's Angelina Marazzi (Manchester, NH) scored seven of her team's 10 points in the period, while Worcester State got six points off the bench from LeMay.

The Falcons narrowly edged Worcester State by a margin of 15-13 in the third quarter, with junior Payton Holmes (Carver, Mass.) notching a team-best six points, but couldn't carry any momentum to the fourth, as the Lancers held the hosts to just eight points in the final 10 minutes to seal the victory. Sophomore Sarah Blomgren (Lunenburg, Mass.) added eight points in the second half to lead the Lancers.

Inside the Numbers

  • Falcons were led by Marazzi with a team-best 16 points, 5 assists, 4 steals and 2 rebounds
  • Holmes added 8 points, while Lindsay McDonald (Stoughton, Mass.)  put in 7 points for the Green and Gold
  • For the Lancers, LeMay scored a game-high 17 points off the bench, and was one of four Lancers in double figures. Blomgren and Sweeney each scored 12 points, while junior guard Colleen Cutting (Auburn, Mass.) matched a season-high with 10 points. 
  • This afternoons contest is the 71st meeting between two schools with Falcons 21-50 all-time vs the Lancers
  • Fitchburg State shot 13-for-38 (34.2%) from the field and (4-for-11) 36.4% from three point range
  • Worcester State finished 24-for-50 (48%) overall and (16-25) 25% for beyond the arc
  • Worcester State held a 38-21 margin on the glass

Fitchburg State will return to the hardwood on Wednesday night when they travel to Framingham State. Worcester State will be back in action the same evening, hosting Bridgewater State.
