Falcons Upend Spartans, 19-14

Alves and Kozikowski combine for 12 points in non-conference victory 

Castleton, Vt. – The Fitchburg State women's lacrosse team defeated the Spartans of Castleton University, 19-14 this afternoon in non-conference action from Dave Wolk Stadium.

How It Happened

Fitchburg State took a 4-1 margin to open the contest as junior Madison Alves (Braintree, Mass.) tallied a trio of goals, while freshman Gabriella Scibilia (Haverhill, Mass.) added the goal for the Falcons.

Castleton cut the deficit to 4-2 with senior Erin Shuttle (Georgia, Vt.) collecting her second score of the contest, but the Green and Gold answered back when senior Tracy Long (Georgetown, Mass.) netting the tally.

The Spartans chipped the lead to 8-5 with newcomer Elizabeth Lumbra (Sheldon, Vt.) and senior Morgan Derosia (Vernon, Vt.) notching tallies before Fitchburg State took a 13-6 advantage into the break as freshman Eva Kozikowski (Portsmouth, N.H.) and senior Rebecca Fisher (Dracut, Mass.) registering two goals each, while sophomore Julia Miele (South Hadley, Mass.) chipped in with one score.

Following the intermission, Castleton started the second half with three straight goals as Shuttle Derosia and sophomore Aubra Linn (South Portland, Maine) found the back of the net to make the score 13-9. Fitchburg State responded (15-9) minutes later thought as Miele netted back-to-back markers.

The Spartans cut the lead to 17-12 midway through the second frame on tallies from Lnn, senior Nicolle Trivino (Georgetown, Ont.) and Derosia before the Falcons secured the victory as Alves and Scibilia connected on scores, resulting in the 19-14 final

  • Sixth meeting between the two teams in lacrosse with the Falcons 1-5 all-time vs Castleton
  • Alves led the way for the Falcons, registering a game-best five goals, one assist, one ground ball and two caused turnover

Falcons will travel to Colby-Sawyer next Monday for a non-conference tilt, starting at 4:00 PM. Spartans will host the Cardinals of Plattsburgh State on Tuesday for a non-conference bout at 6:00 PM.
