Capozzi Nets Game Winner to Lift Vikings to 1-0 Victory over Elms College

Chicopee, Mass. — Battling rainy weather conditions, the Salem State women's soccer team (5-6-2) collected a 1-0 victory over Elms College (7-6-2) on the road Wednesday night. Senior midfielder Taylor Capozzi (Lynn, MA) netted the Vikings' lone goal in the 85th minute, finding the back of the net for the third time this season. Junior goalkeeper Rebecca Sabino (Peabody, MA) stopped six shots on goal to earn her fifth shutout of the season.

As the clock ticked down on the scoreless first half, Elms held the slight 5-4 advantage in shots. The stalemate continued into the second half of the game, however, the Vikings began to pressure the Blazers defense more as they picked up three second-half corner kicks and held the Blazers to zero.

Capozzi broke the deadlock after collecting the ball 25 yards out and taking on three defenders before slotting it into the far side for the game winner with less than six minutes remaining in regulation. The ball did not leave the offensive end for the remainder of the game with the Vikings attempting one more shot on goal before the buzzer sounded.

The Vikings return to conference play on Saturday, October 19 in their annual Think Pink game at Alumni Field. Salem State will kick off at 4 pm versus Mass Maritime.
