Worcester State Earns First MASCAC Women's Cross Country Championship
For the first time since Women's Cross Country started in the MASCAC, the Worcester State Lancers earned their first championship on Saturday afternoon in Westfield, Mass.
For the first time since Women's Cross Country started in the MASCAC, the Worcester State Lancers earned their first championship on Saturday afternoon in Westfield, Mass.
The Lancers took home their first title with 30 points breaking runner-up Westfield State's 13 year streak. The Owls came in second with 53 points. Up next in third was Bridgewater State with 79 points while Framingham State was next with 106 points. Closing out the team finishers were Fitchburg State and MCLA in fifth and sixth with 112 and 171 points, respectively.
Helping Worcester State to their first title was the 2017 MASCAC Women's Cross Country Rookie of the Year Shaylee Puleo who crossed the line 11th with a time of 20:06. Teammates Mia Rogers, Justine Murdocca, Elisabeth Olson and Kelsey Bedard earned a spot on the All-Conference team. Rogers was second in 18:56, Murdocca sixth in 19:48, Olson seventh in 19:50 and Bedard ninth in 19:59.
Jessie Cardin of Westfield State became the first MASCAC runner to claim Runner of the Year honors four straight seasons. She crossed the finish line in 18:19, almost 40 seconds ahead of the next racer. Joining Cardin as All-Conference honorees are teammates Andrea Noland and Kerry O'Neil. Noland finished third in 19:31 while O'Neil was 10th in a time of 20:04.
Taylor Roberts of Framingham State came in fifth with a time of 19:44 to earn a spot on the All-Conference squad.
Rounding out the All-Conference winners from Bridgewater State were Jenise Madden and Emily Guyon. Madden had a time of 19:39, good enough for fourth while Guyon was eighth in a time of 19:52.
For helping Westfield State to a second place team finish, Bill Devine was named the 2017 Champion's Choice Women's Cross Country Coach of the Year as voted on by his peers.
