Westfield State Wins Third Straight MASCAC Women's Outdoor Track and Field Championship
For the third straight year, the Westfield State Owls are the MASCAC Women's Outdoor Track and Field Champions after competing in the MASCAC/New England Alliance Championships at Bridgewater State on Saturday.
For the third straight year, the Westfield State Owls are the MASCAC Women's Outdoor Track and Field Champions after competing in the MASCAC/New England Alliance Championships at Bridgewater State on Saturday.
The Owls finished with 271 points for the MASCAC title while Worcester State was second with 168 points. Bridgewater State came in third with 145 points while Fitchburg State and Massachusetts Maritime rounded out the teams in fourth and fifth with 51 and three points, respectively.
Westfield State ended the day with nine individual league crowns and all three relays. Jessie Cardin was a three-time winner in the 1,500 meter run (4:50.13), 3,000 steeplechase (10:46.12) and 5,000 meter run (17:59.33). Her steeplechase time was a new MASCAC and Alliance record. Alexa Popp was a dual winner in the 200 meter dash (26.02) and 400 meter dash (56.99). Rachel Farley won the 800 meter run with a time of 2:23.60.
In the 4x100 meter relay, Ashley Craig, Popp, Kerri Long and Sabrina Pray crossed the line first with a time of 48.28. Pray, Popp, Long and Erin Giugno finished first in the 4x400 meter relay with a time of 4:02.60. The quartet of Autumn Brown, Rachael Farley, Lauren Izabel and Kara Penney grabbed the 4x800 meter relay with a time of 10:05.15.
On the field side, Brianna Deloury was first in the high jump with a top leap of 1.59 meters (5' 2.50"). Craig broke the MASCAC and Alliance record in the pole vault with a top clearing of 3.86 meters (12' 8"). Lauren Gilderdale earned the MASCAC crown in the discus throw with a top distance of 37.69 meters (123' 8").
Worcester State finished with four individual titles. Doreen Buabeng crossed the line first in the 100 meter dash with a time of 12.89. Justine Murdocca earned the MASCAC title in the 10,000 meter run with a time of 39:15.92. Bernice Mensah grabbed the league crown in the triple jump with a time of 10.67 meters (35' 0.25"). Stephanie McFadries had the longest MASCAC javelin toss with a top distance of 40.79 meters (133' 10").
Bridgewater State claimed four individual crowns today. Jayci Andrews was a dual winner in the 400 meter hurdles and long jump. She set a new MASCAC and Alliance record in the 400 with a time of 1:02.77 while she had a top leap of 5.31 meters (17' 5.25") in the long jump. Kira Gilbreath also won two events on the day. She finished first in the shot put (13.67m/ 44' 10.25") and hammer throw (43.63m/ 143' 2.00").
Fitchburg State had one individual winner. Annie Woolley claimed the MASCAC title in the 100 meter hurdles with a time of 14.39.
Westfield State also won the New England Alliance title with 167 points over second place finisher Rhode Island College with 140. The 11 MASCAC and Little East schools make up the New England Alliance.
