Westfield State Wins Back-to-Back MASCAC Women's Indoor Track and Field Championships
For the second straight year, Westfield State has won the MASCAC Women's Indoor Track and Field Championship which was held at the Providence Technical Academy in Providence, R.I. on Saturday.
For the second straight year, Westfield State has won the MASCAC Women's Indoor Track and Field Championship which was held at the Providence Technical Academy in Providence, R.I. on Saturday. They were also the New England Alliance Champions which is run in conjunction with the Little East Conference.
Westfield State ended the meet with 234 team points while runner-up Bridgewater State was next with 148 points. Worcester State was next in third with 110 points while Fitchburg State rounded out the team rankings in fourth with 84 points.
Westfield State finished with seven individual titles and all three relays on the way to their MASCAC Championship. Winning three MASCAC crowns on the day, Jessie Cardin was first across the line in the 800 meters (2:22.69), mile run (5:14.37) and 3,000 meters (10:35.16). Alexa Popp was a dual winner in both the 200 (26.44) and 400 (58.58), a new MASCAC record.
On the field side, Brianna Deloury was MASCAC champ in the high jump with a top leap of 1.59m (5' 2.50"). Ashley Craig set a new MASCAC record with a top pole vault clearing of 3.60m (11' 9.75") for league honors.
In the 4x200, Kerri Long, Erin Guigno, Sabrina Pray and Popp were first for the MASCAC with a time of 1:47.20. Joining Popp, Pray and Guigno in the 4x400 was Margaret Damotta with a conference winning time of 4:07.22. Autumn Brown, Mary Elizabeth Dignan, Rachael Farley and Cardin were the fastest quartet in the 4x800 with a time of 10:13.78.
Bridgewater State had four individual titles at the meet. Kira Gilbreath was a two-time winner for the Bears. She finished first in both the shot put (12.88m/42' 3.25") and weight throw (14.12m/46' 4.00"). Tess Miller claimed a league title in the 600 meter run with a time of 1:40.95 while teammate Emily Guyon finished first in the 1,000 meter run in 3:14.16 for the conference title.
Worcester State totaled three individual titles all won by Bernice Mensah. She finished as a MASCAC champion in the 60 meter dash (8.09), long jump (5.29m/17' 4.25") and triple jump (11.03m/ 36' 2.25").
Fitchburg State ended the day with two individual titles. Annie Woolley set a new MASCAC and Alliance record in the 60 meter hurdles with a finals time of 8.77 seconds to earn a league crown. In the 5,000 meter run, Amy Kelly crossed the line first with a time of 18:45.41 for a top finish.
Westfield State claimed the Alliance title with 128 points over second place finisher Southern Maine who had 101.50. Bridgewater State was the next MASCAC school in fourth with 92 points.
