Fitchburg State Claims 2017 MASCAC Men's Cross Country Title
For the second time in three years, the Fitchburg State Falcons claim the MASCAC Men's Cross Country Championship on Saturday at Stanley Park in Westfield, Mass.
For the second time in three years, the Fitchburg State Falcons claim the MASCAC Men's Cross Country Championship on Saturday at Stanley Park in Westfield, Mass.
The Falcons finished with 30 points to take home the title over runner-up Bridgewater State close behind with 34 points. Westfield State was next in third with 83 points while Worcester State was fourth with 105 points. Massachusetts Maritime came in fifth with 155 points. MCLA and Framingham State rounded out the teams in sixth and seventh with 162 and 205 points, respectively.
Leading the Falcons to the championship was Brian Amaral, the top overall finisher with an 8k time of 25:41 for the MASCAC Runner of the Year honor. Joining Amaral on the All-Conference team were teammates Jake Hastings in third (26:19), Anthony Darrigo in fourth (26:42) and Joseph Darrigo in eighth (27:03).
Earning the 2017 MASCAC Men's Cross Country Rookie of the Year was Gilley Kabamba with an 8k time of 27:21, good enough for 10th place and a spot on the All-Conference Team. Last year's Rookie of the Year Trevor Wysong finished second with a time of 26:07. Justin Lucier and Mike Hutchinson crossed the line in fifth and sixth with a time of 26:46 and 26:56.
Rounding out the All-Conference honorees are Tim Forrest and Patrick Brett. Forest crossed the line in 26:57 for seventh place while Brett was ninth with a time of 27:17.
Fitchburg State's Jim Jellison was named the 2017 Champion's Choice Men's Cross Country Coach of the Year as voted on by his peers for leading the Falcons to this year's crown.
