Zelzer Headlines 2015-16 MASCAC Men's Ice Hockey All-Conference Team
Junior Marcus Zelzer of Salem State has been named the 2015-16 Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference Player of the Year and leads the All-Conference team as voted on by the coaches from around the league.
WESTFIELD, Mass. -- Junior Marcus Zelzer of Salem State has been named the 2015-16 Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference Player of the Year and leads the All-Conference team as voted on by the coaches from around the league.
Leading the Vikings to a 16-2 record in conference play, the MASCAC regular season title and the top seed in the MASCAC Tournament, Zelzer finished the regular season first in the MASCAC in both goals against average (1.76) and save percentage (.932). He also tallied a 16-1 record which was the best winning percentage in the conference at .941 and recorded four shutouts on the year.
Earning the 2015-16 MASCAC Rookie of the Year honor is Matthew Volonnino of Plymouth State. The freshman from Hackettstown, N.J. helped the Panthers to a 15-2-1 record in league play and the second seed in the MASCAC Tournament. He tallied 10 goals and nine assists for 19 points during his first year with the squad. His two game winning goals tied for seventh best in the conference.
For his efforts in leading his team to 20 conference wins, the top seed in the tournament and a first round bye, Bill O’Neill has been named the 2015-16 Champion’s Choice Coach of the Year.
Joining Zelzer on the MASCAC All-Conference First Team are Andrew Wigg of Plymouth State, Cam Moniz of Salem State and Dalton Jay of Westfield State at forward, Gabriel Cromp of Salem State and Kyllian Kirkwood of Westfield State on defense.
The MASCAC Second Team is made up of Michael Economos of Plymouth State, Brandon Platt of Salem State and Casey Shea of UMass Dartmouth at forward, Brad Jones of Salem State and Jerry Laasko of UMass Dartmouth on defense and Gordon Ceasar of Plymouth State in goal.
