On a blustery day at Wachusett Country Club in West Bolyston, Mass., Springfield College claimed the 2019 Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference Men's Golf Championship.
Springfield scored a 316 for a two-day score of 616 as they won the championship by six strokes. Westfield State finished second with a 622, including a 315 which was the best team score on Sunday. Salem State took third with a 631, while Elms (659), Worcester State (671), Dean (684), Mitchell (686), MCLA (739), and Eastern Nazarene (754) rounded out the team scoring.
After a three-way tie at the end of today's round atop the leaderboard at 152, Springfield's Mike Strong and Corey Roya along with Westfield State's J.J. Newcombe battled for the individual title. Strong held on to win after the two hole playoff with back-to-back pars to earn MASCAC Individual Champion honors. Joining Strong and Roya as an All-Conference honoree for the Pride is Jake Raichle who finished tied for fourth with a two-day score of 153.
The tournament runner-up Westfield State had three student-athletes in the top 10 to earn All-Conference accolades. Along with Newcombe, the Owls' Matteo Godek and Michael Waldman were recognized. The duo finished in tied for fourth (153) and tied for eighth (156), respectively.
Salem State finished with three student-athletes in the top 10, including Aaron Paskowski, who carded a two-day total of 155 for seventh place and MASCAC Rookie of the Year accolades. Teammate Max Emmerich was right in front of him in sixth with a 154 while Paskowski's twin brother Ian came in 10th with a 157.
Rounding out the All-Conference honorees is Michael Deitz of Eastern Nazarene who tied for eighth with a 156 to grab a spot on the second team.
Joe Eadie of Springfield College was named the Champion's Choice Coach of the Year as voted on by his peers.
