Westfield State College captured the 2009 Massachusetts State College Athletic Conference Football Championship with a perfect 5-0 league slate under the guidance of 20th year Head Coach Steve Marino, who collected his 100th career victory on Halloween afternoon in a 32-16 triumph over Fitchburg State.
The Owls posted an overall mark of 7-3 this fall and bested all MASCAC foes while also notching a 5-2 slate in the Bogan Division of the New England Football Conference, which is the primary affiliation for all MASCAC football-playing institutions.
Sophomore quarterback Kyle Anderson (Westminster, Mass.) keyed Westfield State's attack by passing for 1,217 yards and 11 touchdowns this season, while fellow sophomore running back Luke Johnson (South Attleboro, Mass.) fell one yard shy of reaching the 1,000 yard plateau while adding six scores. Senior wide receiver David Benoit hauled in 44 receptions on the year for 713 yards to go with five touchdowns for the Owls, who were paced defensively by senior linebacker Chris James (Athol, Mass.), who amassed 81 total tackles, including 37 solo stops.
Bridgewater State and Framingham State each finished second in MASCAC play with a record of 3-2, while Massachusetts Maritime followed in fourth place at 2-3 in league action. Worcester State and Fitchburg State rounded out the standings with 1-4 MASCAC marks.
