Eight Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference football student-athletes were named to the D3football.com All-East Region Team as announced by the organization yesterday.
Elvis Romero of Bridgewater State, Devin Summiel of Fitchburg State, Quentin Jones, Matt Mangano, Matt Silva and Nick Stanfield of Framingham State, Johnnie Medina of Western Connecticut State and John Ollari of Westfield State earned a spot on the team.
In 11 games this season, Romero accumulated a career-high 58 tackles (36 solo) including 14 tackles for loss and six sacks to go along with a forced fumble. The Wayne, New Jersey product finished tied for fifth in the Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) in both tackles for loss and sacks.
Summiel earned a spot on the third team after hauling in 53 passes for a team-leading 756 receiving yards and a new Fitchburg State single season record of 12 touchdown receptions. He finished third in the MASCAC with 12 receiving touchdowns during the regular season.
Stanfield, a D3football.com third team selection a year ago, adds to his hardware following a stellar senior season. Stanfield was previously named All-New England by the New England Football Writers after repeating as the MASCAC Offensive Lineman of the Year. Stanfield is a three time All-MASCAC first team selection and was tabbed as the New England Football Conference's (NEFC) Offensive Rookie of the Year after his freshman season in 2012. Stanfield anchored the Rams offensive line in 2015 as the Rams offense averaged 435 yards and 38 points per game while allowing just 15 sacks on the year.
Silva continues to accrue honors after a record breaking senior season. He earns his first D3football.com recognition after being tabbed as the MASCAC's Offensive Player of the Year and a first team all-conference selection. Silva ranked among the nation's and conference's leaders in most passing categories throughout the year. He completed 264-of-411 passes for 3,168 yards with a school record 41 touchdowns with just seven interceptions. Silva, who currently holds 12 FSU passing records, established new school records for touchdowns in a game (6), touchdowns in a season (41), yards passing in a game (510) and season (3,168) during his senior campaign. Silva also received a pair of New England Football Writer's Gold Helmet Awards, the NEFW Season Gold Helmet Award and he was selected as the recipient of the 2015 Joseph P. Zabilski Award which is presented annually by the Gridiron Club of Greater Boston to the top offensive and defensive player in Division II and III.
Quentin Jones earns first All-Region honors after earning back-to-back All-MASCAC honors. Jones, a senior, led the MASCAC in sacks racking up 11 on the year for a conference best loss of 72 yards. Quentin Jones recorded 46 total tackles on the year with 32 solo stops including 16.5 for a loss.
Mangano, the MASCAC Defensive Player of the Year and a first team all-conference selection, garners his first All-Region honors after recording 53 tackles, including 37 solo and three for a loss, during his final season. Mangano, a NEFW All-New England selection, tallied two interceptions that he returned for 32 yards, five pass breakups and a blocked kick during his final season with the Rams.
Medina landed a spot on the second team after earning MASCAC Second Team accolades last month. The senior from Naugatuck, Conn. helped anchor an offensive line that led the conference in total offense (5,144 yards), yards per game (514.4), passing yards per game (314.2) and points per game (41.2).
Rounding out the MASCAC honorees is Ollari from Westfield State who was a MASCAC First-Team All-Conference receipient. The sophomore from Millers Fall, Mass., led the MASCAC in punting with 42 punts for an average of 40.9 yards per kick. He had 11 punts inside the opponents' 20, and yielded six fair catches.
The teams, selected in balloting by East Region sports information directors and D3football.com staff, were chosen from 310 nominations by Division III member schools. A total of 79 players were chosen. Players nominated for All-Region are eligible to be considered for D3football.com All-America honors, which will be announced the evening of Dec. 18, in D3football.com’s pregame coverage for Stagg Bowl XLIII.
