Six MASCAC Football Student-Athletes to Compete in D3 Senior Classic
Six Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference Student-Athletes will compete on Friday, December 13 in the D3 Football Senior Classic in Salem, Va.
WESTFIELD, Mass. -- Six Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference Student-Athletes will compete on Friday, December 13 in the D3 Football Senior Classic in Salem, Va.
Playing for the North squad on Friday is Framingham State's Melikke Van Alstyne, Pat McGrath and Chevere Archer, Massachusetts Maritime's Stefan Gustafson, Western Connecticut State's Devin Myers and Worcester State's AJ Scerra. Framingham State's head coach Tom Kelley is the head coach for the North squad.
Van Alstyne, McGrath and Archer are all members of a Rams' team that made their second straight appearance in the NCAA tournament a few weeks ago. All three were also named to the MASCAC First Team All-Conference last month. Van Alstyne and McGrath earned a spot on the New England Football Writers All-New England team as well.
Hitting the 6,000 career rushing yard mark to close out his senior season, Van Alstyne had 19 touchdowns and an average of 147 yards per contest this year. Last week, he was named the Gridiron Club of Boston Joe Zabilski Award winner along with Merrimack College quarterback Joe Clancy.
McGrath led the Rams with 101 total tackles on the year, averaging 9.4 per game, while teammate Archer finished with 39 tackles, including 14.5 for a loss. As a defensive unit, they only allowed 188 totals points this season for an average of 16.6 points per game.
Running back Gustafson was a crucial piece of the Buccaneers offense this season, which earned him a spot on the MASCAC Second Team All-Conference. He finished the year averaging 137 yards per game with eight touchdowns. In three games during the season, he topped the 200-yard mark while also tying the school record for rushing touchdowns in a single game with four.
Joining Gustafson on the All-Conference squad were Myers and Scerra. Colonials defensive lineman Myers closed out his junior campaign with 51 total tackles, including 10 for a loss of yardage and four sacks. The Lancers' wide receiver Scerra finished the year with seven touchdowns and 648 total yards.
Played the week prior to the NCAA Division III Championship game, the D3 Senior Classic is set to kick-off at 7 p.m. on Friday at Salem Stadium in Salem, Va.
