WESTFIELD, Mass. – Octavias McKoy of Western Connecticut State headlines the 2013 D3football.com All-East Region team after being named the East Region Offensive Player of the Year.
Representing the Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference along with McKoy are Matthew Green and Rob Ruggiero of Bridgewater State, Melikke Van Alstyne of Framingham State, John Moriarty of Massachusetts Maritime and Casey Hibbert of Worcester State.
Last month, all six student-athletes were named to the MASCAC All-Conference team while McKoy, Van Alstyne, Ruggiero, Green and Moriarty landed themselves on the New England Football Writers All-New England team.
Having an outstanding year for the Colonials, McKoy was named the MASCAC Offensive Player of the Year. The senior from Stratford, Conn., averaged 190 yards per game and 26 touchdowns, including a 455-yard effort to put him second on the all-time list for most rushing yards in a single game across all NCAA divisions.
Earning a spot on the East Region offense second team were Van Alstyne, Green and Hibbert. Van Alstyne helped the Rams to their second straight NCAA tournament appearance and an undefeated conference record. He averaged 147 yards per game with 19 touchdowns on his way to being named the Gridiron Club of Greater Boston Joe Zabilski Award winner, which recognizes New England’s top player in Division II and III on each side of the ball.
Leading the MASCAC in receiving yards, Bridgewater State’s Green was the top wide receiver in the league with 16 touchdowns and 131 yards per game average. As the tight end for Worcester State, Hibbert finished the season with seven touchdowns and 105 yards per game average.
Rounding out the East Region third team was Moriarty on the offensive and Ruggiero on the defensive side of the ball. Moriarty was a crucial piece of the offensive line for Massachusetts Maritime that averaged 494.2 yards of total offense this year and finished the season with 349 points scored for second best in the conference.
Ruggiero, who earned MASCAC Defensive Player of the Year last month, led the conference with 12 sacks on the season and added 33 solo tackles, including 23.5 tackles for a loss.
The teams, selected in balloting by East Region sports information directors and D3football.com staff, were chosen from 284 nominations by Division III member schools. A total of 77 players were chosen.
