Westfield State Earn Back-to-Back Howard C. Smith Cup Honors
Westfield State earned their second straight Howard C. Smith Cup after COVID cancelled the 2020-21 award. The Smith Cup is awarded annually to the member institution which compiles the most points based on the placement of each of its programs competing in the league championship sports.

WESTFIELD, Mass. -- Westfield State earned their second straight Howard C. Smith Cup after COVID cancelled the 2020-21 award. The Smith Cup is awarded annually to the member institution which compiles the most points based on the placement of each of its programs competing in the league championship sports.
The Smith Cup is named in honor of former Massachusetts State College Trustee Howard C. Smith, who in 1970, urged the athletic directors of the eight State institutions to hold a series of meetings to discuss the possibility of forming an intercollegiate conference. In June of 1971, Smith’s dream became a reality as an affirmative agreement was reached and the MASCAC was created.
Westfield State finished the year with 115.50 points out of 160 possible (72.19 percent). The Owls were atop the standings in women’s cross country, women’s lacrosse, women’s soccer and tied for first in field hockey and men’s basketball. They also were second in volleyball, baseball and men’s and women’s outdoor track and field.
Coming in second is Bridgewater State with 104.50 points out of 148 possible (70.61 percent). The Bears were regular season champions in baseball, softball, men’s and women’s outdoor track and field while claiming the second spot in women’s basketball, football, men’s and women’s cross country and tied for second in women’s soccer.
Worcester State is next in third with 105 points out of a possible 160 (66.63 percent). The Lancers collected a first place finish in men’s cross country and volleyball, second in the standings in men’s ice hockey, softball and women’s soccer (tied) and third in women’s cross country, field hockey (tied), football, men’s basketball and women’s lacrosse.
Sitting in the fourth spot with 86.50 points out of 154 possible (56.17 percent) is Framingham State. The Rams came in first in football and women’s basketball, second in women’s lacrosse and men’s soccer and third in volleyball and softball (tied).
Landing in fifth is Salem State. The Vikings had 63 points out of 120 available (52.50 percent) after finishing first in men’s soccer, tied for first in field hockey and men’s basketball, tied for third in men’s ice hockey and tied for fourth in women’s soccer.
Fitchburg State is in the sixth spot with 57.50 points out of 160 available (35.94 percent). The Falcons were first in men’s ice hockey, second in men’s cross country, third in men’s outdoor track and field and fifth in field hockey (tied), softball, women’s outdoor track and field and men’s basketball.
Closing out the 2021-22 standings are Massachusetts Maritime and MCLA in seventh and eighth, respectively. The Buccaneers collected 35 points (31.25 percent) out of 112 possible points and finished third in baseball, fourth in football and sixth in women’s lacrosse. The Trailblazers netted 25 points (22.32 percent) out of 112 possible points after coming in fourth for volleyball and men’s soccer, tied for fifth in men’s soccer and tied for sixth in women’s basketball.
