Members of the Buccaneer Student-Athlete Advisory Committee and Department of Athletics staff participated in a field day event at the Riverview School in East Sandwich on Tuesday afternoon, as student-athletes at both institutions competed in a cross country race and soccer match at Riverview’s athletic facilities.

Senior Matthew McDonough (Framingham, Mass./Framingham), juniors Mick Rouette (Three Rivers, Mass./Monson and Thomas Pelletier (Bradford, Mass./Central Catholic), sophomores Erica Overstreet (Bridgewater, Mass./Bridgewater-Raynham), Sara Merzon (Rockland, Mass./Cardinal Spellman), Elias DiTullio (Marshfield, Mass./Marshfield) and Rachel Gardner(Bourne, Mass./Sturgis West) as well as freshmen Marie Harrison (Weymouth, Mass./Weymouth) and Adam Crawford (Kingston, Mass./Silver Lake) represented Massachusetts Maritime’s soccer, cross country, lacrosse and volleyball programs at the event, as participants from both schools ran a 2.5 race around the Riverview campus and played a 35-minute soccer match on the Helmsmen’s home pitch.

The Riverview School is an independent coeducational boarding/day school for students, ages 11-22, with complex language, learning and cognitive challenges located on Cape Cod.  Since 1957, Riverview has been recognized as a leader in the field of special education.  The School is committed to developing student competence and confidence in academic, social and independent living skills.  Students hail from every region of the United States and from many foreign countries.

Buccaneer Director of Athletics Garin Veris and Head Volleyball Coach Melanie Appleman also represented Massachusetts Maritime at the field day event, which concluded with Riverview students being presented with “Buc Backer” t-shirts from the SAAC members.  Buccaneer student-athletes plan to welcome Riverview School students to campus next spring as part of a second field day event during the 2016-17 academic year.
