Adams Goal Wins It in OT For The Lancers

Worcester, MA- After 7 days off from their last game and conference win, the Worcester State field hockey team traveled to Fitchburg State for a rematch with their conference rival on the Falcons senior day. Worcester State won the previous matchup, 5-1, in a game that honored senior Sam Gastonguay's (Ashburnham, MA) legacy in both communities.

Final Score: Worcester State 3  Fitchburg State 2

Recap:

Both teams started off strong, creating scoring opportunities, but it was the hosts who opened the scoring with a goal from senior Joyce Arbia (Sag Harbor,NY). Approximately 10 minutes later, and half way through the second quarter, senior Grace Adams (Leominster,Mass) scored an equalizer to tie the game at 1 with an assist from fellow senior and attack mate Zoe Athanasopoulos (Hopedale,Mass). The goal a piece would hold until half, sending a tightly battled match into the third quarter of action.

Fitchburg came out firing fast and eventually took the lead through Autumn Tibbetts (Lunenburg,Mass), assisted by Sophia Yates (Woodstock,VT) and managed to hold on to the lead through three quarters of play. The Lancers would not back down and were able to find yet another equalizer, this time it was junior Madison Avilla (Westport,Mass) who put the ball past slamming against the backboard to tie the game in the fourth quarter.

The game would remain tied through regulation forcing extra time and action for both squads. It was in this overtime period that Adams notched her second goal of the day and the game-winner in just over two minutes of action into the overtime period.

With this win, the Lancers improve to (9-6,7-1) and will travel to Framingham State for a mid-week matchup that will help the Lancers secure the top seed in the postseason with the victory.
