Falcons Topped By Chargers, 3-0

New London, N.H. – The Fitchburg State Women's Volleyball team dropped a 3-0 decision to the Chargers of Colby-Sawyer College this evening in non-conference action from the Hogan Sports Center.

The Basics

Set One
Fitchburg State raced out to an early 6-0 advantage in the opening set on a kill from graduate student Lauren Riccardi (Tewksbury, Mass.) and an Alissa Olmsted (Ashby, Mass.) service ace. Colby-Sawyer trimmed the lead to 9-6 after a bad set before the Falcons upped the margin to 21-15 on another kill by Riccardi. The Chargers rallied however to take the first set 28-26, capped by kills from freshman Shaelyn Thornton (Scarborough, Maine) and junior Ava LaValle (Peabody, Mass.).

Set Two
Colby-Sawyer took an 8-4 lead in the middle set with a kill by jujnior Ameesah Cotton (Newburgh, N.Y.), but the Green and Gold cut the deficit to 8-7 following a kill from freshman Samantha Mirra (Burlington, Mass.). The Chargers answered with a 7-1 run, capped by Thornton kill, resulting in the 25-15, second set triumph.

Set Three

The visitors grabbed a 9-6 edge in the third set following kills from Riccard and freshman Emily Gelinas (Westfield, Mass.) before Colby-Sawyer knotted the score at 9-9 on a service ace by freshman Mia Lopez (Jourdanton, Tex.). Fitchburg State regained the advantage (17-13) as Gelinas notched a kill, but the Chargers responded with a 9-1 run to take a 22-17 lead following a kill by senior Riley Codman (Dublin, N.H.) and held on for the 25-22 victory in the final set.

Inside the Numbers

This evening's contest marked 11th meeting between Fitchburg State and Colby-Sawyer on the volleyball court with the Falcons 4-7 all-time when taking on the Chargers

Colby-Sawyer had won the previous three matchups against Fitchburg State, including a 3-0 in the last meeting on October 10, 2019 at the Parkinson Gymnasium

Mirra led the way for the Falcons with a team-leading 15 digs and four kills, while Riccardi added a team-high six kills, one dig and one solo block. Junior Meredith Taylor (Reading, Mass.) was also solid for the Green and Gold, collecting ten assists, one service ace, two digs and one solo block.

For the Chargers, Thornton finished with a match best seven kills, 11 digs, two service aces and one solo block, while senior Anna Allen (Los Angeles, Calif.) chipped in with a game-best 20 assists, six digs and one service ace.

Falcons return to action on Tuesday as they host the Owls of Westfield State University in MASCAC action, starting at 6:00 PM. Chargers will host the Bulldogs of Dean College tomorrow for a GNAC tilt at 7:00 PM.
