Slow Start Hurts Western New England at Non-Conference Foe Westfield State, 59-48

WESTFIELD, Mass. - Western New England saw four scorers in double-digits, but the Golden Bears couldn't claw back from an early hole during a 59-48 non-conference loss at Westfield State in women's basketball action on Thursday night at the Woodward Center. Westfield--first place in the Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference standings at 8-0--improves to 17-4 on the season while Western New England slides to 12-8 overall.

Sophomore Sammie Olson and freshman Dorothy O'Neill led WNE with 12 points apiece, and senior captain Sam McCann and sophomore Emily Anderson scored 10 each.

Forbasaw Nkamebo had 13 rebounds and 17 points for the host Owls, who held WNE to 31.0 percent field goal shooting and outscored the visitors 18-7 at the free throw line.

The Owls jumped out to a 29-16 halftime lead thanks to a stingy defense that limited the Golden Bears to 25.0 percent (6-for-25) shooting from the floor. Jen Ashton equaled Nkamebo with 17 total points and shot 6-7 from the charity stripe.

The Owls outscored the Golden Bears 17-6 over the final 10 minutes of the first half to secure the 13-point edge at the break.

Western New England cut the deficit to three on two occasions, once at the 10-minute, 20-second mark (41-38) and again with 4:13 (47-44) remaining behind field goals from Paige Young and McCann.

The Owls pulled away for good when Alyssa Darling drained a transition three-pointer with 1:19 left, extending the lead to eight at 54-46. Ashton, Darling and Jill Valley iced the win by combining for five of six free throws over the last 52 seconds of play. Valley finished with 11 total points. Ashton vaults into third place on the Owls' all-time scoring list with 1,381 points.

Junior Chelsea Vujs added 12 rebounds, a game-high six assists and three steals for the Golden Bears, who never led in the contest.

Western New England heads to Nichols to resume Commonwealth Coast Conference action on Saturday. The Owls travel to face Salem State on Tuesday.
