Softball Falls to Greensboro, William Peace at Fastpitch Dreams Classic

NORTH MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. -- The Bridgewater State University softball team suffered a pair of setbacks on Wednesday at the Fastpitch Dreams Spring Classic in North Myrtle Beach.

The Bears (2-6) bowed to Greensboro College, 11-0, and dropped a 12-3 decision to William Peace University. Both games went five innings due to the eight-run mercy rule.

Greensboro 11, Bridgewater State 0 (5 Inn.)

Senior righthander Kassie Simmons (Gibsonville, N.C.) tossed a complete game two-hit shutout in the circle to lead Greensboro to the 11-0 win in five innings. Simmons (3-2) did not issue a walk and struck out seven.

The Pride banged out ten hits including six doubles. Senior third baseman Kailey Walker (Eden, N.C.) and freshman left fielder Makyiah Simmons (Henderson, N.C.) drove in three runs apiece. Walker went 2-for-3 with a double and a run, while Simmons was 2-for-2 at the plate with a double, a walk and a run.

Senior first baseman Olivia Silva (Somerset, Mass.) and junior designated player Ava Novakoski (Auburn, Mass.) notched Bridgewater State's lone two hits.

William Peace 12, Bridgewate State 3 (5 Inn.)

William Peace pushed across five runs in the top of the first inning and never looked back as the Pacers cruised to the 12-3 victory in five innings. The Pacers recorded 14 hits including seven doubles.

Senior second baseman Anna Suggs (Tabor City, N.C.) went 2-for-2 with a pair of doubles, a sacrifice fly, a run and four RBI to pace the William Peace offense. Junior shortstop Logan Ayers (Oak City, N.C.) doubled and singled twice in four at bats, scored a run and drove in one, while sophomore third baseman Adanya Day (Lexington Park, Md.) went 3-for-4 at the plate with a double and three runs scored.

Senior lefthander Katherine Murphy (Wade, N.C.) went the distance in the circle for the Pacers. Murphy (5-1) gave up three runs on five hits over five innings with a walk and seven strikeouts.

BSU senior second baseman Kerrin McLaughlin (Haverhill, Mass.) singled twice in two at bats and drove in a pair of runs. Sophomore left fielder Emily Marcotte (North Dighton, Mass.), freshman catcher Emily Eastman (Cranston, R.I.) and junior pinch hitter Madison Flamme (Bethel, Conn.) also recorded hits for the Bears. Marcotte and Flamme both scored a run.

The Bears wrap up their Spring Break trip to Myrtle Beach on Thursday when they take on Waynesburg University at 9:00 AM and Penn State-Altoona at 1:00 PM.
