Morse collects five saves for Green and Gold

Norton, Mass. – The Fitchburg State field hockey dropped a 1-0 decision to the Lyons of Wheaton College this evening in non-conference action from Nordin Field.

The Basics

Score: Fitchburg State 0, Wheaton 1

Records: Fitchburg State (0-2-0, 0-0-0 MASCAC) | Wheaton 1-1-0, 0-0-0 NEWMAC)

How It Happened

Wheaton nearly grabbed the lead early in the opening frame with sophomore Riley Levrault (Lakeville, MA) putting back-to-back shots on target, but Falcon keeper Jenna Morse (Leominster, MA) turned aside both shots to preserve the 0-0 deadlock.

In the second quarter of play, Fitchburg State threatened as sophomore Sophia Yates (Woodstock, VT) and classmate Jessica Morse (Leominster, MA) fired shots on target before Lyons netminder Emma Lapreziosa (Bowdoinham, ME) denied both scoring chances.

Wheaton's best scoring opportunity of the second stanza occurred in the 20th minute of play when Levrault ripped a shot, but Morse was up to the task again to keep the score knotted at 0-0 going in the break.

Following the break, the Lyons broke the 0-0 stalemate with ten minutes remaining in the contest as junior Marcey Poitras-Cote (Northampton, MA) inserted a penalty corner to classmate Lydia Gaudreau (Gorham, ME), who connected for her first tally on the season for the 1-0 edge.

The Falcons nearly tied the contest with 50 seconds remaining in regulation when sophomore Olivia Narkevicius (Templeton, MA) blasted a shot on frame, but sophomore back Maddie Hatch (Gorham, ME) cleared the ball off the goal line for a defensive save, resulting in the 1-0 final.
