Women's Volleyball Claws Past Bears

WORCESTER, Mass. - The Worcester State University women's volleyball defeated Bridgewater State 3-1 in Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference action Wednesday evening at John P. Brissette Court. Set scores were 21-25, 25-23, 25-17, 25-15.

With the win, Worcester State improves to 5-11 and 3-0 in the MASCAC. Bridgewater State falls to 4-3 overall and 2-1 in conference play.

The Lancers battled in the first set. Brooke Lamothe (Tewksbury, Mass.) had three service aces in a row to keep Worcester State in the fight. A kill from Leelle Tyler (Longmeadow, Mass.) tied the Lancers 21-21 at the end, but were unable to finish.

The second set was a similar battle to the first, both teams going back and forth for control of the board. An early streak for the Lancers was brought about with two service aces from Lamothe and two kills from Tyler. With the set tied at 23-23, Maeve Cadogan (Wilmington, Mass) put the Lancers on top and a kill from Angela Colonis (Waterford, Conn.) won the set for the Lancers.

The third set opened with an early service run from Natalie Gillis (Ashland, Mass.) which forced the Bears to take a timeout and had the Lancers up 8-4. A pair of serve aces from Denise Hoxha (Worcester, Mass.) continued to grow the Lancer lead which grew to 20-11. Colonis aced her serve to conclude the set and put the Worcester State up headed into the fourth set of the match.

Worcester State came out strong in the fourth set going up 10-4 early on in a run that saw four kills from Gillis. Steady strong play from the Lancers kept them on top throughout the set and their win was solidified on a kill from Cadogan.

Gillis finished the match with 12 kills, one assist, one service ace and 11 digs. Sarah Ward (Townsend, Mass.) had six service aces on the night, Lamothe ended with five.

Worcester State will be back in action Saturday for a trimatch at MIT against the host and Smith.
