Jake Bartnik, Ryan Dickinson Combine for Four Goals in 5-0 victory against Westfield State

SPRINGFIELD, Mass.--Four Golden Bears had a multi-point game on Saturday as the host Western New England University men's soccer team opened the 2013 season with a convincing 5-0 victory over Westfield State in the first game of the Soccer City Shootout at Suprenant Field. Senior Jake Bartnik and freshman Ryan Dickinson scored two goals apiece, while freshman Scott Trautwein chipped in a goal and assist and senior Ryan Williams contributed a pair of assists.
The Golden Bears started out strong with a crafty pass by Williams to Bartnik, who headed it in the net for an early 1-0 lead just 5 minutes and 33 seconds after the opening kickoff.

The Owls threw every defensive strategy they had into play, but the Golden Bears' brilliant passing on the fast break led to another goal netted by Dickinson in the 35th minute.

Entering the second half, the Owls trailed 2-0 and made substitutions to mix things up, and changed the game plan from a center attack to a sideline back-door offense, but it still wasn't enough to stop the Golden Bears' offensive pressure which included a 22-8 shots advantage and 8-0 edge in corner kicks for the contest.

The Golden Bears notched three more goals by Dickinson, Trautwein and Bartnik over a 6:58 span beginning in the 61st minute, putting the game out of reach for the Owls.

With help from senior goalkeeper and co-captain Domenick Villano (6 saves), the Golden Bears' continuity on defense was more than enough to cruise past WSU.
Kristian Driscoll tried to generate offense for the Owls with two shots on goal. Keith Hevey stopped nine Golden Bear shots.
#6 Montclair State 4, Emmanuel 0
Nationally-ranked Montclair State got two goals from Ryan Morris and outshot Emmanuel 28 to 5 to force a Shootout championship date against the host Golden Bears at 2:30 p.m. Sunday. Emmanuel and Westfield State will meet for third place at noon.
