Soccer falls to Westfield State in double overtime, 1-0

September 24, 2014

Box Score WESTFIELD, Mass. — The Smith College soccer team played well across the board but Sarah Sypek's goal in the 103rd minute allowed Westfield State University to pull out a 1-0 win in double overtime at Alumni Field Wednesday evening.

With the win, Westfield State improves to 4-2-1. Smith's record dips to 3-2-1 with the loss.

The Owls outshot the Pioneers, 24-7, including a narrow 6-3 edge on shots on goal. First-year goalkeeper Shelby Hall (West Springfield, Mass./West Springfield) turned away five of the six chances faced, but there was not much she could do on Sypek's match winner.

It was tough-luck loss for the Blue and Gold, who had several good chances but were unable to find a way to best Owls netminder Anne Stack, who made three saves.

Junior Jordan Houston (Logan, Utah/Logan) (two shots on goal), senior Jenna Bicierro (New Hyde Park, N.Y./New Hyde Park) (one shot on goal) and sophomore Emily Smith (Winchester, Mass./Winchester) (one shot) had some good chances throughout but Stack was up to the task each time.

The Pioneers are home on Saturday for a 1:30 p.m. New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) tilt with Babson College.
