Seahawks set program record for wins with sweep of tri-match

WORCESTER, Mass. - The Salve Regina University women's volleyball team improved to 14-7 on the season after earning victories over both Mass. Maritime Academy and Clark University on Saturday.  The Seahawks defeated the Buccaneers in straight sets, 3-0, before earning a hard-fought 3-2 win over the Cougars. The 14 victories this season by the Seahawks sets a new program record for wins in a single season.

The Seahawks took the first match by scores of 25-7, 25-12, and 25-11. Senior Amy Canino (Hebron, Conn.) led the way with a team-high eight kills and seven digs, while Kelsey Stafstrom recorded 19 assists and six aces in the win. Junior Sarah Showalter (East Lyme, Conn.) and freshman Tara Kuck (Huntington Station, N.Y.) also played well, compiling 10 and eight aces, respectively.

In Salve Regina's second match, the Seahawks battled the Cougars over five sets with scores of 11-25, 25-22, 25-19, 22-25, and 15-8. Sophomore Clare Adams (New Concord, Ohio) had 13 kills and 15 digs in the victory, while senior Megan Clancy (Chelmsford, Mass.) recorded 35 digs. Senior Julianne Barry (Randolph, Mass.) led all players with 11 blocks while adding nine kills, and freshman Taylor Violet (Tiverton, R.I.) dished out a team-high 38 assists.

The Seahawks will be back in action on Tuesday at 7 p.m. when they play a Commonwealth Coast Conference match versus Wentworth.
