Pioneers Drop a Pair at Tom Hay Invitational

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 SPRINGFIELD, Mass. - The Smith College volleyball team (6-13) dropped a pair of matches Saturday at the Tom Hay Invitational, hosted by Springfield College. The Pioneers fell to Vassar College, 3-0, before falling to Westfield State in four sets.

In the first match, Smith was unable to get the victory over Vassar, falling in three sets (25-16, 25-17, 25-16).

The Pioneer offense was led by the sophomore duo of Allison Hardy (Nashville, Tenn./University School of Nashville) and Lauren Shaffer (Downey, Calif./Whittier Christian). Hardy finished with seven kills, while Shaffer collected five. First year setter Dayra Diaz Marquez (Bayamon, Puerto Rico/New Mission) registered a team-best 10 assists.

Defensively, Smith was led by senior Samantha Danguilan (Round Lake, Ill./Round Lake), who tallied a team-high 11 digs, while Marrquez supplied five.

Game two against Westfield State saw the Pioneers fall in four sets (17-25, 18-25, 25-23, 23-25).

Hardy and Shaffer were at it once again on the offensive end, as Hardy finished with a season-high 20 kills while Shaffer tallied 12. Diaz Marquez flashed her passing ability as she recorded 21 assists and sophomore Julie Voorhes (Ramona, Calif./Ramona) added a season-high 17 assists in just her third match setting for Smith.

The defense was led by senior Samantha Danguilan (Round Lake, Ill./Round Lake), who recorded a season-best 31 digs. Danguilian now ranks 10th in the NEWMAC with a 3.60 digs per set average.

The Pioneers will hit the courts next on Saturday, Oct. 18 as they travel to the Little East/NEWMAC Challenge, hosted by Plymouth State University. Their first match will come against Keene State College. Game time is set for 2 p.m.
