Ice Hockey Collects 3-2 Overtime Triumph Over AMCATS

Soderberg stops 46 shots for Green and Gold in collegiate debut

Fitchburg, MA. The Fitchburg State ice hockey team earned a 3-2, overtime victory over the Amcats of Anna Maria in non-conference action this evening from the Wallace Civic Center in the Falcons 2023-24 home opener.

How It Happened

Fitchburg State broke a 0-0 stalemate 4:05 into the second period when junior Samuel Rennick (Salisbury, MA) converted a break away attempt, depositing a shot into the right side of the net for his first marker on the season for the 1-0 edge.

In the third period of play, Anna Maria knotted the score at 1-1 2:56 into the stanza as senior Matthew Gilbert (Wyandotte, MI) found the back of the net for his fourth goal of the 2023 campaign. The Falcons regained the lead minutes later with freshman Nicholas Millhorn (Brownstown, MI) collecting a feed from juniors Toivo Kramer (New York, NY) and Michael Macchioni (North Kingstown, RI) and buried a shot into the lower right corner for his third score on the season to make the score 2-1.

The Amcats retied the contest (2-2) with eight minutes remaining regulation when freshman Max Wennerberg (Sodertalje, Swe) tucked a shot into the left side of the net for his first college goal to force an overtime period.

In the overtime period the Green and Gold secured the victory 3:55 into the stanza with newcomer Kristopher Zapata (Cherry Hill, NJ wristing a shot near side into the net for his first collegiate tally as graduate student Antoine Gignac (Quebec City, QUE) and freshman Jackson Collins (Wake Forest, NC) assisted on the play, resulting in the 3-2 final.
