Women's Volleyball Overwhelmed by Owls

WORCESTER, Mass. - The Worcester State University women's volleyball fell to Keene State in straight sets on Tuesday evening at John P. Brissette Court. Set scores were 25-14, 25-19, 25-22.

 

With the loss, Worcester State falls to 3-9 on the year, while Keene State improves to 8-3.

The opening set had the Lancers close to the Owls, until Brianna Azzinaro (Ashaway, R.I.) and Elizabeth Johnson (Rockledge, Fla.) combined their serving efforts to go up seven points at the end.  The Lancers' efforts were led by Natalie Gillis (Ashland, Mass.) with three kills and Maeve Cadogan (Wilmington, Mass.) with a kill and a block.

 

Kacie Blanchet (Salem, N.H.) put the Owls up 4-0 to start off the second set. The Lancers fought valiantly, with Gillis finding herself with six kills and a block assist in the set. Camryn Burgio (Quincy, Mass.) and Gabby Alberghini (Northborough, Mass.) both had three kills in the effort.

 

The second set continued the Cougar momentum. Camille Flurry (Athens, Ga.) led the Cougar offense with 5 kills. While the Lancers fought hard point by point they were unable to take control offensively and fell 25-10 on the set.

Worcester State went up ahead of the Owls in the third set taking a seven point lead at one point. Azzinaro's service efforts put the Owls back into the play though. Johnson closed the Owl victory with a kill. Brooke Lamothe (Tewksbury, Mass.) had two service aces in the set, and Tyler led with three kills.

For the visiting Owls, Sydney Johnson (Brentwood, N.H.) led  the match with 16 kills, eight digs and a block assist. Gillis led the Lancers with 11 kills, 15 digs and a block assist.

Worcester State will return to action on Thursday when they head to Western New England University. First serve from is scheduled for 7 p.m.
