Lillquist and Hamilton Combine for 6 Goals in Loss to Westfield State

April 01, 2015

Box Score SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – Jessica Lillquist (East Lyme, Conn./East Lyme) recorded three goals and two assists while Julia Hamilton (Williamstown, Mass./Deerfield Academy) added three scores, but the Smith College lacrosse team was defeated 19-9 by Westfield State University in Wednesday night's non-conference game.

Smith is now 3-7 while Westfield State, which recorded the edge in shots (41-24) and shots on goal (33-18), evened its record to 4-4.

Lillquist, starting in her second-straight game after returning from injury, scored a season-high three goals on five shots. Hamilton netted three goals to extend her goal streak to seven games. Petru Bester (Deep River, Conn./Valley Regional), Jenny Estes (Falmouth, Mass./Falmouth) and Lizzie Sturtevant (Leyden, Mass./Northfield Mount Hermon) each added a score, while Rachel Silveria (Dunstable, Mass./Groton-Dunstable) and Caroline Myran (Philadelphia, Pa./Germantown Friends School) both tallied an assist.

Westfield State was led by Meg Griffin (3g, 4a), Caroline Smart (3g, 1a) and Stephanie Godek (2g, 1a). Five other Owls tallied multiple points. Starting goalie Mimi Khampaeng made five saves and exited after 37 minutes. Alanah Melanson made four saves of her own the rest of the way.

Westfield State scored the game's first three goals, but the Pioneers cut the deficit to two (3-1) on Lillquist's first of the contest. The Owls responded with a 3-0 spurt to make it 6-1 when Lillquist tallied her second goal of the game at the 11:51 mark. Smith got to within three (7-4) on back-to-back markers by Sturtevant and Estes, but the Owls added a goal with under five minutes remaining in the first half to take an 8-4 lead into the half.

That was unfortunately as close as Smith could get, as the Owls outscored the Pioneers 11-5, including five unanswered during the second stanza en route to the 19-9 victory.

Smith returns home for their next two contests, beginning with Saturday's game against Wellesley College at 1 p.m.
