Women's Volleyball Splits Tri-Match With Fitchburg and Albertus Magnus

MILTON, Mass. - Curry College split Saturday's tri-match against Fitchburg State and Albertus Magnus. Defeating Albertus Magnus in four sets at Dr. Eleanor Meyerhoff Katz Gymnasium.

MATCH ONE: Fitchburg 3, Curry 2 (20-25, 22-25, 25-23, 25-23, 15-14)

The Colonels got off to a hot start in set one with Lauren Guzman (Cranston, R.I.) earning three kills within the first ten points. That along with a service ace by Morgan Kramer (Brightwaters, N.Y.) helped put Curry on top 11-6 midway through the set. A late service ace by Abby Sousa (Seekonk, Mass.) prompted a timeout by Fitchburg followed by a kill by Guzman to close out set one in favor of the Colonels.

After going back and forth for the beginning of set two, a five-point scoring run featuring kills from Jess Sullivan (Meredith, N.H.) and Leah Oscar-Phoenix (Westwood, Mass.) put Curry on top 13-9. With the set tied at 22-22, a clutch kill by Oscar-Phoenix and two straight service aces by Natalie Cloutier (Litchfield, N.H.) gave the Colonels a 2-0 match lead.

Sets two and three came down to the wire as the Falcons managed to force a deciding fifth set which they won to complete the reverse sweep on the Colonels.

Guzman led Curry in multiple categories, finishing with 15 kills and 24 digs. Sousa also finished with a solid stat line with 31 assists and 13 digs.

MATCH TWO: Curry, Albertus Magnus (25-16, 19-25, 19-25, 25-23)

After dropping set one the Colonels bounced back in set two, quickly establishing an 8-3 lead thanks to kills by Sullivan and Sonja Matheson (Voluntown, Conn.). A five-point scoring run which featured kills by Guzman and Oscar-Phoenix and a service ace by Matheson gave Curry a 15-7 lead. Curry closed out the set with a service ace by Cloutier and a pair of attack errors by the Falcons.

The Colonels got off to a strong start in set three with another five-point run resulting in an early 7-2 lead. Curry extended the lead to seven points (14-7) ultimately winning the set off a kill by Guzman and a block by Sousa and Jenna Cotter (Watertown, Mass.).

The final set was neck and neck until the Colonels went on an eight-point scoring run which included a pair of services aces by Sydney DeCarvalho (Hope, R.I.) to pull away with a 21-14 lead.

Guzman led Curry with eight kills while DeCarvalho had 16 digs. Sousa led the Colonels with 21 assists.

Curry College (4-10, 0-2 CCC) returns to action on Tuesday (10/3) with a Commonwealth Coast Conference match on the road against Suffolk beginning at 7 p.m.
