Lancers Drop Skirmish to Colonels

Worcester, MA- The Worcester State Lancers hosted the Curry College Colonels in a non-conference matchup on Wednesday night. The Lancers were looking to grab their first win before returning to conference action this weekend.

The Colonels  broke the deadlock just three minutes into the game with a goal from junior Lucas Drons (Bellingham,Mass) receiving a midfield pass and charging down the right sideline to lift a lofted ball over the hands of a leaping first year Tobias Schneider (Hudson, WI) . After the quick goal, the Lancers defense was able to settle into the game, transferring the ball up and down the field. The sidelines were each team's extra defense as they hugged the line throughout the majority of the first half. Both teams battled for possession and created numerous chances but the Colonels held onto the one goal lead into halftime. Schneider finished the half with 2 saves.

Senior Andy Ramirez (Waltham,Mass) entered the cage for the second half for Worcester State in a split goalkeeper game for the Lancers. Curry College continued their attack by scoring their second goal of the game two minutes into the half with a strike from senior Ean McGonigle (Rehoboth,Mass) who nabbed the ball off the defenders legs and charged again down the right sideline, launching a 25 yard ball across the cage to drop into the left corner to put Curry about 2-0. A third goal was recorded two minutes after that with a penalty kick converted by senior Adam Pforr (Weymouth,Mass) off late tackle by Ramirez in an attempt to break up a quick attack in the box. The remainder of the game saw each team testing new strategies and lineups as they worked their way up and down the pitch.

Ramirez ended the half of action with two saves, with Worcester State recording four in the game, while the attack recorded six shots to Curry's seven in the game.

Worcester State falls to (0-4-3, 0-2) and will host rivals Fitchburg State on Saturday at 12pm.  Curry now sits at (5-1-3, 0-0-2) on the season.
