Women's Lacrosse Wraps Up Regular Season Play with 16-4 Win Over UMass Boston

NEWTON, Mass. – The visiting Bridgewater State University women's lacrosse team wrapped up regular season play with a 16-4 victory over UMass Boston on Saturday.

The Bears improve to 7-10 on the season while the Beacons end their first season as a varsity program with a record of 1-12.

Camryn Gonsalves (East Bridgewater, Mass.) tallied a game-high six goals to go along with an assist while Erin McIntyre (Tewksbury, Mass.) scored a pair of goals and added three assists to pace the visitors. McIntyre also checked in with three caused turnovers and two draw controls.

The Bears also received three goals, two caused turnovers and three draw controls from Meredith Sylvia (South Dartmouth, Mass.) as well as two goals apiece from Savannah Herrington (Kinnelon, N.J.) and Katy Shaw (Centerville, Mass.). Herrington led all players with five draw controls.

Bridgewater led 7-4 at the break as Gonsalves scored five of the Bears' seven first-half goals. Teresa Sheedy (Quincy, Mass.) netted a pair of goals over the first two periods for the Beacons including a free position tally with just four seconds showing on the second quarter scoreboard.

The Bears dominated the second half outscoring the Beacons, 9-0, with six of the nine goals coming in the third quarter. Sylvia notched three goals in the third period alone while McIntyre tallied two goals and two assist over the final 30 minutes.

Bridgewater held a 40-19 shot advantage for the game as well as a 19-9 edge in ground balls. Draw controls were 12-11 in favor of the visitors.

The Bears went 17-for-25 in clear attempts while the Beacons converted 15 of 18 on the clear.

Brooke La Torra (Oak Park, Calif.) and Laura Giovaniello (Walpole, Mass.) split the game in between the pipes for the Bears with La Torra starting and playing the first and third periods. La Torra made three saves to record her fifth win of the season.

UMB netminder Leah Bosch (Minnetonka, Minn.) turned aside nine shots in just under 54 minutes (53:48) of action.

Bridgewater is the #4 seed in next week's Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) Tournament. The Bears will entertain #5 Fitchburg State University in a quarterfinal round game on Tuesday afternoon at four o'clock.
