Falcons Clipped By Colonels In Non-Conference Action

Milton, Mass. – The Fitchburg State Women's Volleyball team dropped a 3-0 decision to the Colonels of Curry College this afternoon in non-conference action from the Katz Gymnasium.

The Basics

Set One
Curry grabbed a 4-1 margin to start the first set on back-to-back service aces by senior Lexi Pereira (Attleboro, Mass.) before Fitchburg State rallied to take a 6-5 edge as senior Leah Sheehan (Billerica, Mass.) and freshman Samantha Mirra (Burlington, Mass.). Trailing 13-9, the Falcons cut the lead to 14-13 on an Emily Gelinas (Westfield, Mass.) kill, but the Colonels secured the first set on a kill from Rebecca Johnson (St. Petersburg, Fla.).

Set Two
The Green and Gold grabbed a 3-1 lead in the second set on a service ace by senior Meredith Taylor (Reading, Mass.) and a Gelinas kill. Curry answered back (11-5) with kill from senior Amanda Wood (Tokyo, Japan). The Colonels ended the second set on a 7-0 run with sophomore Avia Fraine (Mattapoisett, Mass.) notching a pair of service aces.

Set Three

Fitchburg State raced out to an early 6-2 advantage on service aces by Sheehan and Gelinas before Curry knotted the score at 7-7 on a Wood kill. The Colonels would take an 18-13 edge following an attack error before the Falcons cut the deficit to 20-17 with Sheehan registering a pair of kills, while graduate student Lauren Riccardi (Tewksbury, Mass.) also notched a kill. The Green and Gold continued to battle (24-22) as Riccardi netted a service ace, but Curry collected the victory on an attack error, resulting in the 25-22 third set final.

Inside the Numbers

This afternoon's contest marked fourth meeting between Fitchburg State and Curry on the volleyball court with the Falcons 0-4 all-time when taking on the Colonels

Curry has won the previous three matchups with Fitchburg State, including a 3-0 decision earlier this season at the Parkinson Gymnasium

Gelinas led the way for the Falcons with a team-leading five kills, six assists, five digs and one service ace, while Sheehan added five kills, six digs and three service aces. Taylor was also solid for the Green and Gold, finishing with a team-best 11 assists, one kill, seven digs and one service ace.

For Curry, Pereira notched a game-best nine kills, two assists, two service aces and seven digs, while Wood chipped in with eight kills, four service aces, two digs and one blocking assist.

Falcons return to action on Tuesday as they host the Lasers of Lasell University for a non-conference matchup, starting at 6:00 PM. Colonels will host the Hawks of Roger Williams on the same date for a CCC clash at 6:00 PM.
