Shaffer named to All-Tournament Team as Pioneers complete play at HOF Tournament

October 25, 2014

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 NORTHAMPTON, Mass. - The Smith College volleyball team concluded play at the 2014 Hall of Fame Tournament, co-hosted by Smith and Amherst College, with a pair of losses Saturday afternoon.

The Pioneers fell to Bridgewater State, 3-0, before dropping to Westfield State by the same score.

For a young team like Smith, there were some definite positives in defeat.

Sophomore Lauren Shaffer (Downey, Calif./Whittier Christian) continues to impress playing all the way around, racking up 23 kills (2.56 kills per set) and 14 digs (1.56 per set) in her three matches this weekend. Shaffer's efforts were good enough to earn All-Tournament recognition as she was one of 16 honored.

In the first match of the day against Bridgewater State, Shaffer led the Smith attack with a team-high six kills. First years Dayra Diaz Marquez (Bayamon, Puerto Rico/New Mission) and Xela Miller (Granada Hills, Calif./James Monroe) finished with 13 and 9 digs, respectively. Fellow classmate Jenna Rubin (Norfolk, Conn./Suffield Academy) tallied four kills, six digs and two solo blocks, while sophomore Julie Voorhes (Ramona, Calif./Ramona) notched six assists and six digs.

The Smith offense was led in the loss to Westfield State by Shaffer with seven kills and seven digs. Voorhes totaled 15 digs, while first year Sakura Tamaki (New York, N.Y./Fiorello H. LaGuardia) finished with eight.
