Massachusetts Maritime Academy rallies for a 19-14 victory over Western New England

Scoring Summary

BUZZARDS BAY, Mass.
– Sophomore Stefan Gustafson (Plymouth, MA) scored on a 54-yard punt return with 12 seconds left in the third quarter that proved to be the winning points as the Massachusetts Maritime football team opened its season with a 19-14 victory over Western New England Saturday afternoon (Sept. 10) before 1,212 at Clean Harbors Stadium.

The Golden Bears, who were playing without senior quarterback Bryce Brown (Guilford, CT) who is out with an injury, fall to 1-1.

Senior running back Matt White (Westwood, MA) contributed to the win by scoring twice and rushing for a game-high 117 yards on 26 carries (4.5 avg.). He gave the Buccaneers a 6-0 lead with a four-yard with 6:35 left in the opening period.

WNE took a 14-0 advantage in the second quarter behind sophomore quarterback John Krafick (New Milford, CT) who directed a six-play, 69-yard scoring drive that resulted in an 18-yard run by senior running back JJ Jachym (Milford, CT) just 33 seconds into the quarter.

Krafick had a key 15-yard pass to freshman receiver Adam Dunne (Holyoke, MA) on third and 13 at the hosts’ 33-yard line to set up the touchdown.

Krafick then fired a 14-yard scoring pass to junior receiver Brendon Thompson (Enfield, CT) with 1:21 left before halftime to cap a six-play, 69-yard drive.

Massachusetts Maritime pulled within a point when White scored on a one-yard run with 10:41 remaining in the third quarter.

The Golden Bears didn’t make a first down on three possessions in the period and Gustafson made a big play with his punt return.

WNE made one last push late in the fourth quarter moving from its 20 to the Buccaneers’ 31, but couldn’t score.

Krafick did a credible job filling in for Brown completing 16-of-31 passes for 165, but he suffered two interceptions (the first leading to White’s first touchdown) and had a fumble recovery. He also averaged 40.6 yards for seven punts with a long of 60 and two kicks inside the 20.

Dunne and Thompson each had four receptions for 37 and 36 yards, respectively.

Sophomore defensive tackle Kevin Soule (Medfield, MA) compiled a career high 13 tackles. Junior defensive end James Georges (Stamford, CT) had seven tackles and a sack. Senior linebacker Joe Ciccarella (Guilford, CT) also had seven stops. Junior free safety Phil Tsopanides (Fairfield, CT) had an interception.

MMA sophomore quarterback Mike Stanton (Quincy, MA) finished 11-for-23 passing for 101 yards. Senior linebackers Walter Butler (Bourne, MA) and Mike Bois (Lakeville, MA) each recorded nine tackles with Butler also getting a sack.

Western New England held a slight 252 to 234 advantage in total offense.
