Spartans Race Past Falcons

Ashema leads defense with 8 tackles

  Fitchburg, Mass. – The Fitchburg State University football team dropped a 35-0 decision to the visiting Spartans of Castleton University on Saturday afternoon at Elliot Field.

 How It Happened

 Castleton opened up the scoring just three minutes into the first frame. Senior quarterback Jacob McCarthy (West Yarmouth, Mass.) connected down the sideline with junior Saijon McIntosh (Waterbury, Conn.) for a 13-yard score. Lucas Morse (Whitehall, NY) scampered five yards to the endzone to double the lead for the Spartans. Kicker Noah Crossman (North Chittenden, VT) was 2-for-2 on extra points for the 14-0 after one quarter.

Trailing 21-0, the Falcons had their best drive of the first half. Quarterback Joseph Haskins (Pepperell, Mass.) dropped back and found wide receiver Jordan Dickerson (Springfield, Mass.) down the middle for 62-yards. A muffed field goal attempt ended the drive for the Green and Gold.

In the third quarter the visitors extended the lead to 35-0, McCarthy would throw a pair of touchdowns. He found wide receiver Anthony Martinez (Brattleboro, VT) and McIntosh for the scores.

Inside the Numbers

 

  • Haskins was 10-for-28 for 110 yards, while Dickerson was the number one target with 78 yards.
  • McCarthy was 17-for-28 for 242 yards and four touchdowns. Martinez finished with 85 yards and a touchdown
  • Senior Mukandu Ashema (Worcester, Mass.) led the Falcons' defensive core with 8 tackles (5 solo). Freshman Dakotah Lucero (Los Lunas, NM) and senior Joel Monteiro (Brockton, Mass.) each chipped in with 6 stops.

Falcons return to action next Saturday at Worcester State, to kick-off MASCAC conference play, game time is slated for 2:30PM.
