Lancers Overpower Vikings in Doubleheader Sweep

SALEM, Mass. – Salem State softball welcomed the Lancers from Worcester State University for a Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) matchup. The Lancers would use five innings to take the 8-0 victory in the first game before a 14-hit performance led the Lancers to the 7-0 victory in game two. The losses dropped the Vikings to 10-24 overall and 5-7 in MASCAC action.

Game One

  • A single by Emily Bartlett (Lowell, Mass.) in the opening frame brought around the first run of the game to give the Lancers an early 1-0 tilt.
  • The Lancers took the game over in the top of the third, with Bailey Tammaro's (Fitchburg, Mass.) three-run triple highlighting the seven-run inning that put Worcester up 8-0.
  • The Vikings tried to chip away in the home half of the fourth after back-to-back singles from Dawn Eisnor (Medford, Mass.) and Paige Souza (New Bedford, Mass.) landed two runners on base, but they would be stranded two batters' later when a strike out ended the inning.
  • The Lancers held the Vikings hitless in the bottom of the fifth to take the 8-0 victory after five innings.

Game Two

  • The Lancers opened the scoring in the second stanza after a Tammaro single gave them the 1-0 tilt.
  • Worcester would add another run an inning later before the Vikings left two runners on base to end the inning with minimal damage.
  • In the home half of the third, Isabella Perrotti (Winthrop, Mass.) notched the Vikings' first hit of the game. Perrotti would eventually find her way to third but wouldn't advance further as the Lancers would strand her there to end the inning.
  • The Lancers would use three hits to bring around just as many runs in the fifth inning to take the 5-0 edge.
  • An inning later a Lancer triple, followed by a ground-rule double would account for two runs to give the Lancers the 7-0 lead which would hold over the final inning to solidify their sweep on the afternoon.

Noteworthy

  • Eisnor had her fourth multi-hit game of the year with her two hits in game one.
  • Emily Bartlett (Lowell, Mass.) gave up only one hit in the Lancers' game two victory.

The Vikings will host Lesley University this Thursday, May 2 for their final non-conference doubleheader of the season. Game one is scheduled to start at 4p.m. followed by game two.
