Western New England College drops close match at Westfield State in season opener

WESTFIELD, Mass.
– Junior midfielder Kyle Yelin (Southwick, MA) scored an early goal in the 18th minute and the Westfield State men's soccer team kept Western New England College off the board in posting a 1-0 shutout victory in the season opener for both squads Wednesday night (Sept. 1).

Yellin took a short pass from senior forward Phil Cimino (Newton, MA) and sent the ball into the net from close range.

Westfield almost added an insurance goal in the second half when sophomore midfielder Jared Spicer (Carver, MA) sent a shot that hit the left post.

Western New England, which had a 17-8 advantage in shots, had two scoring opportunities in the second half, but an attempt by junior midfielder Corey Howard (Hopedale, MA) in the 61st minute and a header by freshman midfielder Kevin Parma (Peconic, NY) in the 78th minute both hit the crossbar.

Junior goalie Jeff Pepoli (Ashburnam, MA) recorded nine saves for the Owls.

A large crowd of 600 attended the match under perfect conditions.
